The Faculty of Agriculture and Technology enters the next stage of its development

On the occasion of its renaming, the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice held a meeting with leading representatives of the business sector, public institutions, directors of secondary schools, representatives of universities and research institutes, professional organizations and other important guests. It also took the opportunity to inaugurate the International Training and Research Centre and the Development Laboratory for Robotics in Agriculture.

The Faculty of Agriculture is historically the second oldest school in České Budějovice. It was founded in 1960 as the Faculty of Operations and Economics, later using the name Faculty of Agronomy. In 1991 it became a founding part of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. It subsequently used the name Faculty of Agriculture until March 2022, when it was renamed to its current name, Faculty of Agriculture and Technology.

By changing its name, the faculty is responding to current developments in agriculture and society as a whole. Agriculture is undergoing a dynamic development due to the intensive development in promising fields of human activity such as robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and electronics. At the same time, the faculty wishes to maintain its emphasis on sustainable development and the environmental aspects of agriculture and food processing.

It is the use of modern technology in production that is completely changing the face of modern agriculture. Examples include fully automated robotic milking parlours, autonomous machines that can perform a range of activities without the need for human operators, or modern automated technological systems used to control the indoor environment in stables. Advances in water, soil and landscape protection, such as the targeted application of pesticides, bio-agents, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals to exactly the plants that need it, would not be possible without modern technology.

The educational and research activities of the faculty are heading in these directions, and the name change logically strengthens communication towards the professional public, applicants for studies, and society as a whole. At the same time, the faculty more clearly accentuates its focus on applied research executed in direct cooperation with its partners from the ranks of enterprises.

To future employers, the new name of the faculty will sufficiently represent also those graduates who have not traditionally studied agricultural degree programmes but are rather focused on the field of food technology, biotechnology, etc.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Technology of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice continues to be a key part of education and research in the field of agriculture and related disciplines and thus bears a shared responsibility for the future of our agriculture and society.
